Clinical Coder (Band 5) – Permanent

Ensure accurate clinical coding of diagnoses and procedures, supporting data quality, reporting and billing across the hospital.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Coder (Band 5) to join our bank team and support accurate, timely clinical coding across the hospital.

This role is for someone who can deliver accurate, timely and high-quality clinical coding in line with UK national standards. This role focuses on inpatient and procedural coding and requires proven experience with ICD-10 (UK 5th Edition) and OPCS-4. The post holder must be able to work independently with no requirement for training or supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Code inpatient diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10 (UK 5th Edition) and OPCS-4 to a high standard
  • Review complex clinical records, including operative notes, and extract accurate coding
  • Support activity reporting, billing, and revenue capture through accurate coding
  • Identify and resolve documentation gaps directly with clinicians
  • Ensure compliance with NHS Digital coding standards and audit requirements
  • Contribute to clearing backlog coding where required
  • Maintain strict data quality and confidentiality standards

Personal Attributes:

Essential:

  • Proven experience working as a Clinical Coder within a UK NHS or UK private healthcare setting
  • Strong, demonstrable experience using ICD-10 (UK 5th Edition) and OPCS-4 (essential)
  • Experience coding inpatient procedures using OPCS-4
  • Ability to work independently with no training required
  • Strong understanding of UK coding standards, rules, and audit expectations
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail

Desirable:

  • ACC accreditation or working towards
  • Experience in private healthcare or mixed NHS/private setting
  • Experience supporting revenue or billing processes

Important:

This role requires prior UK clinical coding experience. Candidates without hands-on experience of ICD-10 (UK 5th Edition) and OPCS-4 will not be considered.

  • Contract: Permanent
  • Location: Endeavour House, Forder Way, Peterborough, PE7 8GX
  • Pay: Up to £16.50 per hour
  • Work Pattern: On-site

Requirements

  • Experience in a Clinical Coding role (Band 5 level or equivalent)
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and coding standards
  • Excellent attention to detail and methodical approach
  • Confidence using IT systems, including Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Clear, professional communication skills
  • Right to work in the United Kingdom
