What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is the medical speciality responsible for diagnosing and treating diseases affecting the skin, hair and nails. Dermatologists use a range of medical procedures to manage issues affecting these areas. They can also address cosmetic issues, helping revitalise the skin’s appearance.

Medications and non-invasive therapies can treat many skin conditions, while others require a minor ops or surgical approach

The most common Dermatological conditions are:

  • Acne
  • Alopecia/hair loss
  • Atopic Dermatitis/skin cancer
  • Blisters on the skin
  • Contact dermatitis (skin irritationc caused by exposure to an allergen)
  • Cutaneous lupus erythematous (skin disease that affects many organs in the body)
  • Cysts, lumps & bumps
  • Erythroderma (redness of the skin)
  • Folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles)
  • Hidradentis suppurativa (recurring abscesses in apocrine glands of armpits or groin, which can cause scarring and disfigurement)
  • Moles
  • Psoriasis (chronic autoimmune disease affecting skin cells that produce too much keratin causing red patches on skin that may be painful if scratched, itchy or sore when rubbed against clothing; often occurs on elbows, knees and scalp but can affect other parts of the body)
When to see a Dermatologist

If you are worried about a new or ongoing skin, hair or nail condition, then you should see a Dermatologist. It is particulary important to see a Dermatologist if you have any of the following symptoms;

  • Acne
  • A rash that does not go away after three weeks
  • A skin growth that is changing or spreading
  • A change in the colour, shape or size of a mole or birthmark
  • Sores that look blisers or warts on your skin
  • A new bump or lump on your skin that does not go away after two weeks
